A bit of leg

Procrastination is one of those things we are all guilty of from time to time.  Lately I have been pretty lazy with updates.  Perhaps not lazy, but busy and whenever I do have time I am too tired to write and keep thinking, “I’ll do it tomorrow,” and then tomorrow becomes next week and so on.  I call it fatiñana syndrome.

With writing, or anything creative for that matter, it helps if you are relaxed, so you can get your mind in the zone.  Lately, with a busy work schedule and lots of other stuff going on I have … Click to read more

Dadobaccy, placcy-baccy and jenkem

20110606 Outdoor ashtray smoking dude face 150x150 Dadobaccy, placcy baccy and jenkem

Smoking is one of those things that has, on the one hand, never really appealed to me, yet on the other, it has always fascinated me.  Contradiction?

Well, it is something I wouldn’t get into myself, as I don’t like the smell or taste of it and it’s bad for you, but I’ve always found it intriguing to watch others – whether that’s watching someone lovingly crafting a “rollie” and setting fire to it, or all the paraphernalia that comes with smoking: cigar cutters, pipes, cigarette holders, lighters and so on.

What’s the plural of M&M?

20110525 Broken hub cap face 150x150 Whats the plural of M&M?Plurals are great because you have more of something.  Why settle for one chip when you can have a plate of chips?  If there’s room for two apples, why only eat one?  What’s the plural of M&M?  This will hurt your head like it did mine!

The so-called greengrocers’ apostrophe – or should that be, greengrocer’s apostrophe? 😉 – is something that annoys me no end.  It’s one of the spelling error’s that annoy’s me most.  See what I did there?  Annoying, isn’t it?  Almost as annoying is missing out apostrophes altogether.

In English there is only one … Click to read more

Telecommunication and the story of Alice and Bob

20110508 Box feeling empty 150x150 Telecommunication and the story of Alice and Bob

Have you ever walked down the street, minding your own business and been startled by someone suddenly seemingly talking to themselves out loud as they walk past?  Perhaps you were in deep contemplation, enjoying your own inner world of peace, winding down from a stressful day at work.

Are they crazy?  Probably not; many people talk to themselves, I’m told. But in this instance they weren’t; they were using their hands-free kit with their mobile phone.  Whilst the uptake has been slow, it’s a sight that’s becoming more common and I always find it looks a bit peculiar.

Helga: The face that made a thousand ice-creams

20110425 Smiling ice cream maker lid 150x150 Helga: The face that made a thousand ice creams

It’s been a hot Easter here in the south-west of England and it’s come and gone for another year.

Easter has come and gone for another year and what a fantastic one it was; the weather was absolutely gorgeous and I managed to sneak in a couple of picnics.  Because of poor planning on my part I had already eaten before I turned up on both occasions but enjoyed the sunshine, the company and watching others eat: a picnic by proxy perhaps, or a proxnic.

With the Royal Wedding next week (that’s Kate Middleton and Prince William, I think…), … Click to read more

The tin can

20110409 Green giant smiling can 150x150 The tin can

In my last full article I wrote about relative size, but what about time?  In our stressful lives it seems we could all do with more of it.

How often have you heard someone say time flies when you’re having fun?  So if time has flown, you’ve had fun, right?  Not necessarily.  I have known time to fly even when I wasn’t having fun.  This often occurs in situations where I am engrossed in something I have to do – fun or not – or if there are a hundred million things to do all at once.  Work is one … Click to read more

Busy bee…

Multi coloured smiling bins 150x150 Busy bee...Hello!  Just a quick note to say I’m incredibly busy at the moment but should have time to write another proper article over the weekend and then normal service should resume!

Busy busy busy, stress stress stress…  This picture was submitted by a reader by the name of Lucy.  She tells me she read the article about the pink bin and came across a whole family of them in a shop.  She apparently made the effort to line them all up with their faces pointing towards the camera.  Now that’s dedication.

I sometimes read horoscopes for fun – mainly in … Click to read more

A thousand words unspoken

20110331 Tear here box 150x150 A thousand words unspokenWords are interesting and they have the power to convey thoughts.  They are, however, a double-edged sword and can be used for good and bad.  A lot of fun can be had with them, too.

Words:  I love them, but what are they?  Initially I found it difficult to come up with a definition.  This is because, as a man of pragmatism, I was thinking in terms of tangible concepts.  For instance, the written word teapot and the spoken equivalent are physically two very different things, neither of which resembles a teapot, but both nonetheless convey the same meaning … Click to read more

Do look back but with a smile

20110327 Motorbike luggage case 150x150 Do look back but with a smile

Today is the day of the British Census 2011 and also the start of British Summer Time (BST).  It marks the end of about five months of coming home from work in the dark and now the clocks have sprung an hour forward.  As a young child I always had trouble remembering which way the clocks went.  There is the mnemonic that says the clocks spring forward and fall back, where fall is used in the American sense.  The only trouble with that is that you can spring and fall in either direction so we’re none the wiser.  I … Click to read more

Junk food for thought

20110323 Thinking bin 150x150 Junk food for thought

Looking at my laptop keys I’ve noticed a sheen appearing on the most frequently used keys (all keys, actually), where the rough textured surface has worn off.  A distinct smooth patch has appeared on the track pad, a bit like the beginnings of androgenic alopecia, or pattern baldness to you and me.  My hair isn’t as thick as it used to be and I have recently opted for a short crop on top to avoid the comb-over look, having tried various styles over the years, including wax.  The latter, I never really understood: you have a shower in the morning … Click to read more
